Amazing Roads:  French Alps

Departing from Grenoble, capital of the Alps, you’ll encounter a series of legendary Alpine passes.  Regularly featured on the Tour de France, these giants offer great riding, spectacular scenery and a glimpse at pastoral life.

As you travel on the famous Route des Grandes Alpes, you’ll conquer passes like Iron Cross, Galibier, Vars, Turini and the highest of them all the Col de la Bonette.  Once you get a taste of these, like any fun amusement park ride, you’ll want to do them again and again.

Amazing Roads: Mount Ventoux

AKA the Windy Mountain or the Bald Mountain.  The Mount Ventoux is an excellent climb.  The reward is panoramic views of Provence and the Alps.  The limestone cap gives the Mount Ventoux a lunar like quality.

Slow down and enjoy Provence.  Authentic villages, lavender fields, vineyards will take you back to a simpler time.  (Don’t worry there’s WiFi).  Enjoy a more relaxed pace.  Watch the locals play a game of boules from a sidewalk café.  Be sure to sample the local specialties, plenty of fresh, local products, seasoned and cooked the provincial way.

Great Destinations:  Briancon

Spend an evening in France’s highest city.  The citadel in Briancon is heavily fortified and protected by a series of overlooking fortresses.  Briancon was of strategic importance in protecting France against invasion.  In 1815 a small group of soldiers and inhabitants held off a vastly superior Austrian army.  A perfect example of military engineering from Vauban who is credited with hundreds of defensive constructions from the 1700’s.

France. Region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Department of Hautes-Alpes. City of Briançon. Briançon is located at an altitude of 1,326 metres (4,350 feet) in southeastern France, near the confluence of Durance and Guisane rivers. It is close to the Parc National des Ecrins and the Vallée de la Clarée. The old town was built by the military architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) to protect the city from Austrians in the 17th century. Briançon has got steep and narrow streets and a lot of tourists visit it every year. A nearby mountain pass, the Col du Montgenèvre, leading towards Turin (former capital of the Duchy of Savoy, often at war with France). Several buildings of Briançon are now in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Every year there is a medieval festival in the old town, with knights and ladies in costume.
